What exactly is the Ego?
Maybe you knew it or maybe you didn’t, but the fact that we all have an EGO. The ego is the logically rational part of our mind that allows us to separate from other people. We constantly use it to make rational decisions about various situations, about other people and the circumstances we encounter on a daily basis. When we say "My name is Nikola", it means that we identify with this part, with our Ego.
In most cases, we associate the Ego with an excessive sense of pride and arrogance, so we say that such people are "Egoists". But the Ego is much more than that. He has a purpose. He is responsible for organizing the various elements of our Self in order to create wholeness and integration. We all need it to function normally as humans.
Now the question is how does the Ego fit into our self-esteem? When we focus too much on the Ego, we begin to separate from the rest of the world, and external forces still have more control over us, which is disastrous for the Ego because it wants to have everything in its hands and control everything. Ask yourself if your picture of a perfect life relies on any of the following examples?
- How much money do you have?
- What do you do and what is your career?
- Do you know important people
- What do you look like?
- Where do you live
- What kind of car do you drive, etc.
If you are defined by your career and what you do, then your self-esteem is left in the hands of this factor. This means if you lost your job you would automatically lose your self-esteem and you would lose the part of you that defines you, so you would lose part of your identity.
The system in which we live has imposed on us the belief that the above things identify us and that these are the things that identify us. But the truth is quite the opposite because all those things have nothing to do with who you are! You are much more than your physical body. You are your soul and it is perfect just the way it is and it is eternal while your Ego is mortal.
We are all connected by a collective consciousness. We are all connected to our creator. When we become able to recognize what the Ego is, and how it tries to control everything around us, we will be able to learn how to live freely without any need to prove that our ego is constantly serving us. Don’t get me wrong, the Ego is crucial to our life on this planet. The point is to learn to cultivate a healthy Ego, not one that controls us and neglects everyone else. You are your Consciousness, that is your true nature. Learn to be aware of the moves your Ego is trying to make. Tame your Ego with your Consciousness and you will be a good and loyal servant. By meditating you will be able to achieve that level of consciousness that you need to recognize when the Ego is trying to take the helm of your life.
The ego is the sum of all the experiences we have had in this life. So the Ego is nothing more than the sum of the information we have gathered so far. This means that we can change our Ego by starting to work on our personal growth and development. We will achieve this by becoming aware of all the destructive beliefs we have about ourselves and the world around us and replacing them with constructive ones that will improve our quality of life. So start feeding your Ego with information that is meaningful and relevant to your future.
The conclusion is that your Consciousness, that is, your Soul, is eternal and that the Ego is only a product of the information we have gathered during our life so far. Nurture your true nature, tame your Consciousness and Ego and teach it to work for your greatest good by absorbing constructive information that will make your life better and of better quality. When you transcend your Ego, you will experience your true essence!
